The word “crystals” can be confusing. Some people think of “light catchers” that hang in a window as being crystals when they are really leaded glass. Others think quartz crystals are the only crystals. Yet many minerals grow in a crystal formation. Some examples are tourmaline, emerald, topaz, lapis, ruby and sapphire, to name just a few. Even salt and potassium can form into crystals. But not all minerals that crystallize have the classic shape that quartz crystals have. Quartz, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, ametrine, rutilated quartz and others can grow into beautiful crystals, as well as growing in non-crystal form.

People use crystals in many ways.

• They have been used in industry for decades (as many minerals have been).
• Many people have used crystals as healing tools. They can be carried in ones pocket, placed on the body as a stone layout, or used in an elixir. (Not all minerals are safe to make elixirs out of.) Please see our healing page for more information on the healing aspects of crystals.

Phantom Quartz Crystal

When you can see the outline of a quartz crystal inside of the crystal, it is called a phantom. This can happen as a result of something etching the face of the crystal or when another mineral (like chlorite) grows over the top of the crystal. The quartz continues to grow over the etching or the new mineral.This results in a beautiful view into the history of the quartz. This particular crystal has numerous phantoms, some from pale green chlorite, some from etching. The back of the crystal has almost a freeform style of polish while the front is the traditional shape. Quite lovely. #crys44

Quartz with Angel Veils

This is a lovely piece of very light smoky quartz that has been polished into a freeform shape. The inside veils look like angel wings. It is quite stunning. There is a lot to look at in this piece. And there are a few spots of iron, which have a lovely yellow-orange color. #crys38

Amethyst Rose

Amethyst roses are beautiful, delicate, pale purple amethyst that has grown in thin plates. There are areas that the amethyst has grown in a floral pattern. It is slightly concave. It is stunning with a light behind it. It sits in a wooden base. From Brazil. #crys39

Druzy Quartz Stalagmite

This is a sweet little stalagmite growth. It is a cream color with areas of iron spots. It is very sparkly. It sits in a wooden base.  #crys41
